New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

• Trend - Decreases in the trend estimate continue to be recorded for new motor vehicle sales. The March 2009 trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales (71 725) was 1.7% lower than the corresponding estimate for February 2009 and 20.2% lower than the trend estimate 12 months earlier. Seasonally adjusted - The March 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (70 279) decreased by 3.2% compared with February 2009.

• Trend - When trend estimates for March 2009 are compared with February 2009, other vehicles sales decreased by 2.5%, passenger vehicle sales by 1.7% and sports utility vehicle sales by 0.6%. Compared with 12 months earlier, sales of all vehicle types were 20.2% lower in March 2009. Sales of sports utility vehicles have decreased by 22.6%, other vehicles by 20.7% and passenger vehicles by 19.2% when compared with the March 2008 level.
• Seasonally adjusted - On a seasonally adjusted basis, March 2009 sales of other vehicles increased by 3.1%. Passenger vehicles decreased by 5.4% and sports utility vehicles by 2.9% when compared with February 2009.

• Trend - Tasmania was the only state or territory for which the March 2009 trend estimate of total new vehicle sales exceeded the trend estimate for February 2009. The increase of 1.3% contrasts with decreases in all other states and territories, the largest being Northern Territory by 3.7%, South Australia by 2.2%, Queensland by 1.9%, Victoria and New South Wales both by 1.6%.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing March 2009 with February 2009, Tasmania (5.6%) and South Australia (4.6%) were the only states or territories to show an increase in the seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales. The Northern Territory decreased by the largest proportion, with seasonally adjusted sales falling by 16.7% compared with February 2009 followed by decreases in the Australian Capital Territory (8.3%), Queensland (5.9%), Western Australia (3.8%), New South Wales (3.7%) and Victoria (1.6%).
